Getting out the Vote

Maybe future presidential nominees should take a cue from American Idol. It was reported about last night's show (I did not watch it) that 63 million votes were cast for the winning contestant. Show host Ryan Secrist bragged that the vote total was more than any elected US President has ever received.

Can that be true?

Yep.

In 2004, George Bush received 59.5 million votes to defeat John Kerry's 56 million. That was regarded as a strong voting year. Previous elections have yielded lower totals.

What does it say about our country and its people that the American Idol vote was of greater popular importance than electing the man regarding as the most powerful person in the world?

Maybe the next American Idol winner should run for office.

Or maybe we should elect presidents in a similar fashion.

We start in July 2008 with 8 Dems and 8 Republicans, we vote every week eliminating within the groups until there are just 2 and 2 and then we have a big battle royale with the winner becoming president and the runner up (regardless of party) becoming the VP.
