Gowin Bowlin

Iowa received a somewhat surprising invitation yesterday to participate in the Outback Bowl on January 2. This was a pleasant surprise in two ways. First, because there are other teams that could have been chosen ahead of the Hawks. Second, because Iowa played in the same bowl just two years ago.

Just as they were in '04, Iowa will be matched against Florida. Then, Iowa crushed the Gators with a fantastic running game and stifling defense.

I think the Iowa team of '04 was slightly better than this years team, or at least more consistent. But, I like Iowa's chances this year. I always think a team like Iowa has something to prove against a team like Florida ... midwest vs. sun state, power vs. speed, national recruiting needs vs. lots of local talent, Big 10 vs. SEC. This is an important game for Iowa to end a disappointing season on an up note heading into 06, when Iowa could conceivably compete again for the Big 10 title. A win is also a plus for recruiting, especially a win in Florida vs. a team from Florida.

January 2 is a Monday. Guess I'll be working a half day :-)
