To Build or NOT to Build

My absence (for all three of you reading) is due to all the time I've been putting into a homebuilding decision. Michelle and I have been tinkering with the idea of buying land and building a home. Weighing the cost vs. the benefit is hard. As of now, the cost side is winning, and it's probably a no go. But it is fun to dream.

Problem is, in order to dream, you've got to pretend the whole thing is really going to happen. So I've been talking with contractors, cement guys, land agents, property owners, etc. A lot of work, and time consuming.

Bottom line, we could have a nice modest house on a 1 3/4 acre lot with lots of trees, if we're willing to increase our mortgage payment by 30 percent. I think I'm too cheap to pull the trigger. That 30 percent buys a lot of groceries, or in my case, are a lot of college classes for my kids in 10 years.

Any thoughts? Someone out there been through the experience before?

College is overrated.

Trees are not.
