A few reflections from our short trip:
- It is amazing to see the full body of the tyrannesaurus rex Sue at the Field museum. Whether you believe her to be 600 millions years old or 6,000 years old (as I do), to see God's creativity in this dinasaur is inspiring. Can you imagine these beasts roaming the earth today? I wouldn't want to make one mad!
- The Hall of Gems at the Field reminded me of John's description of the new Jerusalem in the book of Revelation. John's picture of heaven's brilliance is hard to fathom, especially when you don't know what jaspar or sardonyx is supposed to look like. I have a little better idea now of what John was shown.
- The best time to hit the Brookfield Zoo is early! We got there at the opening (9:30). We roamed free for the first couple of hours. But by noon it was getting full, and by 3 we were hot, tired, and bumping shoulders with the masses. The kids had a great time seeing the animals, and I think we adults enjoyed the gorillas the most (they share so many characteristics with humans).
- The LaQuinta Inn in Oakbrook Terrace is pretty convenient by interstate to both downtown and to the suburbs. We stayed there for $69 ($77 after all the taxes). It isn't fancy, but the price was right, the pool was warm, and the waffle breakfast included.
- We all want to create those special memories for our kids. Even better when they are free! But most things have a price. I haven't yet added up our total cost, but its probably about $300. In the great scheme of life, probably well worth it.
- As for memories ... I don't know about 7 year-old Sam, but the rest of us will always remember traveling to Chicago with our friends and experiencing the sites together. We are blessed in the family of God to be surrounded by so many brothers and sisters with whom we share our life. Thanks be to God for the saints.
