Worship -- Part IV

Why worship God?

We live in a society where time is a precious commodity. There are pressing demands on our schedules -- events, projects, meetings and activities that have to be done RIGHT NOW.

We also live in a, "What have you done for me lately?" age -- you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. In this light, it might be easy to put God on the backburner. After all, what has God done for me lately?

Well, for starters, here's a short list from the book of Romans:
  • Romans 1:16 God has revealed to us the gospel of salvation.
  • 1:20 He has shown us his eternal power and divine nature.
  • 3:23-24 He justifies our lives by his grace.
  • 5:1 We have peace with God through Jesus Christ.
  • 5:2 We exult in hope of the glory of God.
  • 5:5 God has poured out his love to us through his gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • 6:4 We are buried with Christ through baptism, in order that as Christ has been raised from the dead, we too might walk in newness of life.
  • 6:17 We have been made free from slavery -- slavery to sin -- and are now slaves to righteousness.
  • 6:23 We receive the free gift of eternal life.
That's a pretty good list. What has God done for me lately? Just about everything that has any long-term significance, capped by eternal life.

In light of God's extravagance, my natural response should be to worship Him every minute of every day. Yet, I don't. I have to work at it. I have to remind myself often that God alone is worthy of my praise. Sadly, I'm not good enough to worship God out of my own nature. Instead, it is too easy to elevate myself and my concerns above God.

Does this describe you, too?

If it does, I'd just ask you to pause right now and reflect on what God has done for you today. Don't forget such "small" things as that last breath you took, the last smile that crossed your face, the last kiss from your spouse or kids.

God is good. He deserves my worship.
