Every Kid's a Winner

My six year-old son had his last of seven t-ball games today. His team won. In fact, his team had a perfect 7-0 record.

So did the other three teams in the league.

Apparantly when you play six year-old t-ball, you don't keep score. Keeping score, in fact, would be hard to do, because there are no outs. Every kid hits, every player runs, and defense consists of trying to stop the ball from rolling onto the next field. There are no throws to first, no force-outs at second, and certainly no strikeouts. His games were always three-inning affairs, and every player hit in every inning. The last player to bat hits a "home run" and always clears the bases.

After the last at bat of the last game, my son received a certification for "outstanding achievement in the Cedar Rapids Recreation Center T-Ball Program," which undoubtably will be proudly displayed on his wall at home. The child who sat in the dirt and drew pictures when he was suppose to be the second baseman received the same certificate. No doubt his parents are equally as proud.

As a result of this experience, my son will be able to tell his children he did something his old man never did ... hit seven grand slams in a single season. Watch out Barry Bonds ... no steroids in this family.
